When did you start illustrating?
After I graduated from high school, I went to Hubei Institute of Fine Arts and learned many art skills such as printmaking, watercolor painting and illustration. I think that was the first time I defined myself and started my career as an illustrator.
Who has been the most supportive in your illustration career, perhaps your teacher, family, friends?
My parents. As a beginner in my career, I felt defeated sometimes in my daily work. My parents encouraged me a lot and they are my driving force.
Did you always think art was something that was going to be a major part of your life?
Yes. It helps me achieve better self-awareness. We live in a fast-paced world of quick decisions and fragmented thoughts. Creating art allows us to slow down and experience the full range of our emotions.
What is your favourite subject matter to illustrate?
My main subject matter is emotion. In my work, I explore the inner worlds of characters and express my emotions when the surrounding which can influence me as well. When I read novels, story books or poems, I am interested in the descriptions of different characters and imageries, and always think about the characters’ faces and actions at the same time, because literature can describe emotions in precise ways. I want to feel different intense emotions in many conditions by reading all kinds of books. I also want to catch some emotion details which is about people in different conditions or their emotions change in a literary way. It is so interesting to catch these inner world details.
How would you describe your style?
I draw or paint something with texture, using more and more bright, bold, and subjective color blocking in my work.
What is your favourite collaboration to date?
I used to make the surface design for a tea company in the UK. The art directors and I emailed each other and discussed the details of the illustrations frequently, and finally, I did 6 illustrations for them, and they printed out all of them as their packaging design. That was my first time doing the packaging design, and I learned a lot during that time.
