Introducing a real foodie 'Mez Clark!'
We're excited to introduce you to our newest Illo Artist, Mez Clark! Mez’s passion for illustration started when she began illustrating juice and soup packaging designs in her first job as a junior Artistic Director. She enjoys creating playful worlds and magical universes through her playful and humorous art. She hopes her art brings a little happiness to someone!
To bring you a smile to your face, we did a little Q&A with her to find out more about her inspirations, styles and hobbies. Keep reading our Q&A session with her earlier this month..
When did you start illustrating?
I studied illustration in school - it was part of my graphic design degree, but I really began to illustrate during my first job as a graphic designer. The Agency was quite new, we were looking to attracted new clients, so I worked on a few competitions, illustrating characters for juice and soup packets, catalogue covers and posters. That is when I began to realize I loved illustrating.
Who has been the most supportive in your illustration career, perhaps your teacher, family, friends?
My parents, my siblings and my friends and my old boss - Arnaud. Everyone in my life is very supportive, I am a lucky girl!
Did you always think art was something that was going to be a major part of your life?
Art was always my favorite subject, I always knew art would be a part of my future career. I began by studying GCSE art and won the Art prize for my school. Then I continued to study Art in college, until I moved to France. This is where after a year of adapting and studying the language, I moved to Paris and took a preparatory year in Art. This was in preparation to apply to an Art school. It was there that my ‘Perspective’ teacher, saw my potential in Graphic design and introduced me to ‘EPSAA’ where I studied Graphic design for 4 year and gained my degree!
What is your favourite subject matter to illustrate?
Food, I love food, giving a little life or a smile to a cake or piece of veg, is just good fun. It’s a subject and image everyone can understand, it’s food.
How would you describe your style?
My style - I always find this a hard question, I think other people judge my style better than me,
but if I have to describe my style... I would say I am a digital illustrator. I hope it's a happy style, a little fun with a touch of cuteness.
What is your favourite collaboration to date?
I alway love collaborating with my friends, but I think it was probably a project that I worked on with a small English charity. It was not a big collaboration, but it was for a good cause and I was very happy to help. Designing a Christmas card and poster design to help combat loneliness in the local community.
What interested you about being represented by Illo Agency?
I love the group of artist you represent and your mission statement and promise to your illustrators,
the website looks professional and I like the idea of working with the different countries and cultures.
Do you have a favourite author, film director, or designer?
My favorite author at the moment is Carlos Ruiz Zafón. I adore films and movies - a favorite would be hard to chose but ’The Mummy’ is definitely Up there. I love fashion - after illustration fashion is my second love - I couldn’t name my favorite design but I do love a little Baroque style!
Are you working on any personal projects you can share with us?
Yes I am working on a little book - it's the second in a series about a Alien named Harold. I published the first on Amazon last Christmas. It was a story written for my dad's 60th Birthday and I am currently working on the second book which I hope to publish on Amazon before Christmas 2019 (but we will see). I love to write as well as illustrate. In ’The Shadow of the wind’ a book by Carlos Ruiz Zafón - he writes about a secret Cemetery of Forgotten Books (good book). I love the idea that books and stories stay around long after you, so I like to write.
Do you listen to podcasts? If so, do you have a favourite?
I don’t listen to podcasts , I normally listen to my local french radio, my car has had the same cd in it since i brought it, when I work I work with youtube on in the back ground - mostly Crime documentries, BuzzFeed Unsolved and Alien conspiracies theory videos are normally my chosen subject.
