please welcome our new signing - charlie gould!

Charlie Gould

Winter is coming ... and we think the start of a frosty, new month calls for a new artist signing to warm us up! Illo Agency is proud to welcome advertising artist, Charlie Gould, who creates funky, distinct typography. We decided to do a little Q&A session with Charlie, in order to learn more about the face behind the illustration ...

Q: Welcome to Illo Agency, Charlie! We know that nowadays you spend your time creating commercial artwork, but how did you take the steps to become an illustrator?

A: I was never really sure what I wanted to do career-wise, but I have always gravitated towards Art and Design. I initially studied Graphic Design at Diploma level, but always felt much more at home using analogue media. So, I thought I would change things up a little and pursue a degree in Illustration at University. Once I had graduated, it just made sense to carry on - and that's where I am now. A fully-fledged illustrator and printmaker.

Q: It paid off! In your own words, how would you describe your unique illustration style?

A: I've always struggled to describe my style. It's just the way I create all of my work, so I'm a bit lost in finding words to describe it. I have had people call it 'retro', which is probably a fair observation. However, I usually refer to it as a little naive and childish, with some weird subversive humour thrown in for good measure.

Q: Your style is definitely distinct, that's for sure! We are excited to see what you work on next - but what do you consider your ultimate, dream project?

A: I've been lucky enough to already work on a dream project of mine - I was able to illustrate two gig posters for my favourite musician, Courtney Barnett. To continue to do that would turn my dream project into a dream career! Ever since deciding to pursue a career as an illustrator, I've got a real kick out of creating gig and movie posters - so it's fair to say that they're dream projects of mine.

Q: You were looking for representation, but why did you want to sign with Illo Agency in particular?

A: I found Illo Agency through work of another Illo artist, Scott Balmer. From there, I just fell down a rabbit-hole of admiring really good work and discovered an agency that has an ethos that I really agree with. Because of that, I thought I would throw caution to the wind and submit my portfolio - and here we are!

Q: And finally, the big question ... what's your favourite Christmas song?

A: That's an easy one - Fairytale of New York by The Pogues. There's just something about that song that I'm drawn. I don't usually limit myself just to Christmas-time to listen to that one ...
