Sara Gironi Carnevale joins Illo Agency!

The turn of a new week is the perfect time to announce a new signing! Please welcome Italian Illustrator, Sara Gironi Carnevale, to Illo Agency.

Sara usually works with a bright palette combining a graphic look through sharp shapes and visual metaphors. To learn more about her artistic process and how she works, keep reading our Q&A session with her earlier this month...

Q: Hey Sara! Who would you consider as some of your favourite Illustrators?

A: That's always a tricky question for me. When I started my career as an Illustrator I spent so much time watching other contemporary illustrators work, looking for my own style. Since then I have developed a very long list of artists that I admire and that, still today, I don't have the courage to call "colleagues". But, in general, I'm feeling inspired by those who are able to have a strong impact through their art, by making people think about the things that, usually, they just don't want to see. Outside the illustration field, I think Banksy is a perfect example in this respect.

Q: So true, inspiration is all around us! Describe your style, in your own words...

A: People often tell me that my style is very "graphic" and I guess they're right. I like sharp shapes and bright colours and I like to play with visual metaphors. I think style is not only about the sign, but also about the way you see the World. I'm quite an ironic and cheeky person, and sometimes I just can't keep my mouth shut, and I like to that that I'm about to show this side of me through my work.

Q: Bright colours always pop out of the page - we love it, especially your interpretation of worldly events through amazing visual metaphors. When you're not illustrating, what do you get up to in your spare time?

A: I've a bad relationship with spare time because I have to geel unproductive and I'm always looking for a meaning in what I'm doing. Luckily, sometimes I'm able to understand that it's important for a creative to turn off their brain. So I can go out for a run or do some exercise. Or, if I'm feeling lazy, I can enjoy the company of a good book or a tv series. Or I can wear my helmet and go for a ride with Betta, my motobike. Oh and I also enjoy human company, and I never say no to a drink. Or more likely two!

Q: You surely do sound like a busy bee! What is your favourite thing to illustrate?

A: I really like to draw animals. It's something I rarely do for work, but, when I've a pen and a sheet of paper and nothing else to do... well, be certain that I'll draw a fox, or a whale, or a cow... I don't know why, I just find it relaxing!

Q: And finally, why did you want to sign with Illo?

A: I was hungry of new challenging works and I think that an agent could be very helpful in order to achieve this goal, especially if you're an emerging artist. Illo's philosophy seemed to fit what I was looking for in a representative, I guess we liked each other and so... here I am, ready to start this new adventure!
