Nat Geo x Wanjira Kinuya: African American Encyclopedia of History and Culture

We’re pleased to announce that Wanjira Kinyua recently teamed up with Penguin Random House and National Geographic Kids to create The African American Encyclopedia of History & Culture. Set to release December 29th, 2026, this publication aims to be an accessible encyclopedia that explores more than 400 years of African American history.

Created in consultation with leading Black historians, curators, and expert advisors, this comprehensive volume takes kids from humanity’s African roots through enslavement and rebellion in the Americas, from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement, and into cultural milestones like the Harlem Renaissance and hip-hop, offering a clear, accessible overview of African American history and heritage.

Wanjira shares what it was like working on this project:

“Working on the Encyclopedia of African American History & Culture was an incredibly exciting experience. I learned a great deal about African American history, much of which was new to me, and broadened my perspective. Since this was my first time creating commissioned artwork for a book, I’ll admit I was a bit nervous at the start. However, Eva, the Art Director, provided helpful guidance and clear direction throughout the project. The project pushed me to experiment and challenge myself, and I’m truly grateful for the opportunity.”
