hello Valeria Cafagna!

A new week calls for a new singing! Our latest recruit is Italian illustrator, Valeria Cafagna. Check out our Q&A session with Valeria, where she divulges about her love for Japanese artists and drawing dogs!

Q: Hey, Valeria! We are big fans of your work - but who are some of your own artistic inspirations?

A: There are so many of them! The comic genre has been my first love ever since I was a child. I followed Japanese artists for many years, but right now some of my main inspirations include Gipi, Manuele Fior, Marjane Satrapi, Giulia Sagramola. Regarding picture books and illustration in general, I also want to mention Isabelle Arsenault, Beatrice Alemagna, Jon Klassen, Christoph Niemann, Harapekomegane. Art is a big inspiration to me; I remember being obsessed with El Greco and Velázquez when I was in junior high school.

Q:  A great list! Try and describe your style, in your own words ...

A: A friend once told me that my style has many "layers". I think she was referring to the fact that my illustrations are cute and ironic but at the same time, they can be deep and nostalgic. From a graphics point of view, I like plain colours and patterns. I usually work using digital tools, but I'm also open to experimentation.

Q: We couldn't have said it better! What do you get up to in your spare time?

A: I like reading literature, going to the cinema, learning foreign languages, travelling, staying with my friends and family - and in general learning new things about human beings. In the last year, I also forced myself to become more sporty; now I enjoy capoeira and yoga!

Q: How do you have time to illustrate?! What is your favourite thing to illustrate?

A: Definitely dogs and food!

Q: Cute! Those are two of our favourite things, too! Why did you want to sign with Illo?

A: Illo has a contemporary style and a great focus on current trends. I also like the fact that Illo wants to promote artists from different backgrounds and support them at the beginning of their career. Everyone gave me a warm welcome and seemed interested in my work and my aspirations. I think that Illo is the right place for me!

And that's a wrap! If you would like to commission Valeria for your next commission, then reach out to our team of illustration agents who would be happy to help make it happen!
