Ema Ferreira's animated poetry

In 2021, Ema Ferreira was commissioned by author and poet Hollie McNish to create a short animated film for the poem “The Morning After (losing my virginity)”, taken from Hollie’s book ‘Slug: and Other Things I’ve Been Told to Hate’.

Ema shared:

“The piece navigates the universal anxiety and frantic search for a "missing piece" following a first sexual experience—a vulnerability I sought to balance with the empowering spirit of Hollie’s writing. The poem’s rhythmic, breathless enumeration inspired a fluid, ever-morphing animated sequence designed to mirror the tempo of Hollie’s recorded reading.”

The resulting film captures the emotional intensity of the poem while showcasing Ema’s distinctive visual language and playful sense of movement.
