Q: Hey Hingyi! We are so happy to partner with you, here at Illo Agency. Your work is so versatile, how would you describe your style?
A: My work is typography and portraiture based with a focus on animals, hand-rendered lettering and cultural icons. For my nature based pieces, I work with natural materials such as ink, watercolour and graphite.I render phrases and words with cultural significance using a timeless style to juxtapose their meaning within history.
Q: Amazing! It's fascinating to hear how you bring these techniques to life. How did you become an illustrator?
A: I've always gravitated towards illustration. It's a powerful form of communication. I studied Art at UCLA, then designed graphics for the apparel industry working with brands like Hurley and Nike, where I was a Senior Designer, creating tee graphics for eight years. Some of my favourite projects during that time included illustrations for the Olympics and the Super Bowl.
In 2018, I started my full-time freelance illustration career. I created posters for the U.S midterm elections, highlighting candidates I believed in, and watched as my work showed up all over the country. I also started to do more installation work, designing and painting sets for theatre. At the end of the year, I had the pleasure of painting two murals at a school in Tanzania.
Q: Wow, what an impact your work has created. What is your dream project?
A: My dream project would be to go back in time and work on Obama's first campaign poster!
Q: Hmm, I'm not sure we can make that happen! Why did you want to sign with Illo?
A: Illo stands out as a fresh new face in an established field. As a New Zealand citizen living in the Unites States and being of Chinese heritage, I was instantly drawn to Illo's commitment to diversity. The world is a diverse place and we have a responsibility to depict that. Illo is engaged in the conversation, working towards more cultural representation within the illustrators they hire and the work they promote.
Q: Lastly, do you see illustration as a force of change?
A: Illustration can definitely inspire positive change. No matter what is going on in the world, I can find beauty through creativity. Art is a universal that can delight, inspire, rally and unite people - no matter where they're from or what language they speak.
at Illo Agency, we pride ourselves in representing a collation of global illustrators, distinctly diverse in creativity and uniquely celebrated by like-minded clients across a range of commercial markets.
