Noor El Sehnawi, a Venezuelan Syrian freelance illustrator

Here's a Q&A below with a new Illo recruit!; Noor El Sehnawi, also known as Luzzaria, is a Venezuelan Syrian freelance illustrator. Raised in Margarita Island, Venezuela, she now resides in New Jersey. Noor graduated with a degree in engineering, but influenced and inspired by classic cartoons and movies, she became a self taught artist.

She loves to create characterised pieces with textures and colour palettes that inspire her inner child. Some of her previous work includes redesigning and illustrating the Arabic educational book "I Love My Language" published in UAE, and creating illustration graphics for a personalised reading book "Unicorn Dreams'.

When did you start illustrating?

Since I can remember, my favourite activity has always been illustrating. I noticed that I was interested in prints, studying styles, analysing figures, asking myself if I had the opportunity to create that piece, would I do it that same way? I have many memories of myself detailing patterns, colours, figures that caught my attention and that I liked to imitate and practice. Started to see it and use it as a business tool after I graduated in college, and since then I haven't stopped illustrating.

Who has been the most supportive in your illustration career, perhaps your teacher, family, friends? / Did you always think art was something that was going to be a major part of your life?

Lots of my family members and close friends, have always supported my creative side, and helped me see it as something that will form part of my life giving me the feeling that it kind of represents me, specifically this specific friend that really helped me to open my eyes and constantly pushed me to trust my abilities and work on them in order to see it as something bigger rather than just a colourful hobby.

Looking back, and seeing all the facets that my experience in this amazing world has gone through and has been shaped, no, I did not expect it, nor did I imagine it, but it gives me a lot of peace and satisfaction that it is flowing and is part of my life, it is something that 9-year-old Noor would never believe, I think not even 18-year-old Noor. But they would be happy to know that.

What is your favourite subject matter to illustrate?

Anything feminine, innocent, childish, pure, these points always connect with a personal feeling that I enjoy and makes me proud with the results.

How would you describe your style?

My style went through a lot of shapes, but always kept coming back to the one that best represented me. I've always loved the idea of creating textures even in a digital world, so I've always wanted my creations to have this sense of "traditional drawing" with colour scratchings, soft colour pallets, remarkable outlines, cute/ childish characters. It's a sense that still reminds me of my childhood and gives me the satisfaction of archiving it in a more elaborated way.

What is your favourite collaboration to date?

One of my favourite collaborations is the cover design for a Spotify covered Disney song named "When you wish upon a star" by Armando poyo. The small coincidence that lead me to the opportunity of being part of the project, the fact that I worked with a talented Venezuelan artist, and the whole idea of the piece and the result, makes it special to me in many ways.
