Marta Taylor: creator of quirky and unique characters to inspire children
Marta Taylor, raised barefoot in rural New Zealand and now based on the Mediterranean coast near Barcelona, creates vibrant illustrations filled with quirky imperfection and playful characters who often find themselves in a pickle, bringing joy and whimsy to children and adults alike. She is the author and illustrator of Grandma's Odd Socks (Wacky Bee Books, 2022), winner of the FAPA Award in 2023, and is known for expressive characters, bold colour choices, and imaginative worlds that infuse humour and wonder into every story. Marta’s instinctive approach transforms initial ideas into whimsical realms brimming with personality, aiming to spark a love of reading and drawing in young audiences.
Inspired by David Attenborough, Hayao Miyazaki, and French comics, her work blends nature, fantasy, and charm, drawing from her travels and everyday observations. When not illustrating, she enjoys early morning walks, baking, and curling up with a book and hot chocolate.
Let’s find out more about Marta, where she finds her inspiration, how her process works, and more:
What would you say is your best piece of work / collaboration to date, and why?
I'm still in love with my first book, Grandma's Odd Socks, published by Wacky Bee Books. It was my debut as both author and illustrator, and the learning curve was incredible. I can see how much I've grown since then. Every time I spot that book on a shelf, it reminds me of the moment I stepped into what truly is the best job in the world, and it excites me to think about all the creative adventures still ahead.
Where do you like to go to be inspired, or how do you find your inspiration?
I'm always on the lookout for inspiration, whether that's during long walks in nature, reading books and comics, watching kids' TV shows, or travelling when I can. I like to gather it all up and let the ideas marinate in my brain for a few days. Usually, inspiration strikes when I'm doing the most mundane tasks. like cooking or cleaning, and I have to drop everything to sketch it out before it disappears!
Is there anything you'd say you would be a good advocate for? Please elaborate if so.
I'm passionate about creating stories where the main character loves themselves and embraces all their quirks and uniqueness. I've made plenty of unconventional choices throughout my life that set me apart, but I'm so happy with my unique path. I want children reading my books to feel inspired and empowered, to pick up a crayon and think, "I can draw like that too!"
What would you say sets you apart from other illustrators? Something you feel is unique to you.
My illustrations are quirky and whimsical, with characters that have big expressions and tons of personality. The imaginative worlds I create, with a bit of charming imperfection, make the storytelling feel unique and memorable. Plus, my bold colour palettes are pretty recognisable!
If you have done paid commissions prior to joining the agency, what would you say is something that clients repeatedly come to you for (up to now)?
Clients come to me for humorous, colourful picture book illustrations with loveable, cute characters. I also bring quirky, fun ideas to the world-building that make each story feel fresh and original. On top of that, I'm a great listener and bring positive energy to every project. Clients always find me in a good mood!
How would you describe your style?
My illustrations are bold and playful, I love working with vibrant colours and adding quirky imperfections that give them personality. I create cute, funny characters that are easy to fall in love with, living in whimsical worlds full of imagination. My aim is to spark joy in both kids and adults, because let's be honest, picture books aren't just for children!
Please give a scenario of a project that would mean the world to you, if you were offered it - something that connects to something meaningful to you.
My dream project would be a funny picture book where I can be as quirky as I want with the illustrations, I love sneaking humour into every corner. And honestly, I'd love to feature my dog Kiwi in a project one day. He was the clumsiest, happiest golden retriever you've ever seen, and he'd make the perfect character!
Are you working on any personal projects you can share with us?
I'd love to publish more of my own picture books as both author and illustrator. I've got a couple of quirky, funny manuscripts waiting in the wings, and I'm slowly sketching out some new ideas that I'm really excited about.
Finally, if you were to illustrate a book related to a real life person, who would that be?
I'd love to illustrate a book about David Attenborough's life. He was my hero growing up and made me fall in love with animals and nature. Imagine his iconic narrator voice describing the wonders of the natural world, while my quirky, whimsical animal characters bring it all to life and cause absolute havoc. That would be such a fun book!
