Introducing Marylou Chalon: Bold Shapes and Bright Colours
Marylou Chalon is a book illustrator based in Rennes, whose work is rooted in a love of playful, imaginative storytelling for children. Growing up in the countryside, she developed an early passion for art and making, which continues to shape her warm, hands-on approach today. Working primarily on her iPad, Marylou creates colourful, bold, yet gentle illustrations across picture books, activities, and toy design, with a focus on simplicity, strong concepts, and joyful “little faces.” A highlight of her career includes an interactive exhibition featuring a giant magnetic garden that invites children to engage directly with her work. With a background in graphic design, her process blends free sketching, digital refinement, and thoughtful colour exploration. Inspired by everyday moments, handmade objects, and the calm of home, Marylou brings a sense of kindness and quiet wonder to her work, with the aim of spreading joy and creating meaningful experiences for young audiences.
Let’s find out more about Marylou, where she finds her inspiration, how her process works, and more:
What would you say is your best piece of work or collaboration to date, and why?
A few years ago, I created an exhibition inside a public children's library. This was my funniest work. I made a giant vegetable garden with magnets. Kids have fun making garlands and drawings with stencils. I also illustrate giant dominoes ! Definitely, one of my favourite parts is to see children play with my work.
Where do you like to go to be inspired, or how do you find your inspiration?
I really like to find inspiration in daily life. A flower, a dog, a cup of tea, draw on the blur, everything can be the starting point of a piece of work. Also, I like maximalism, handmade objects, design, architecture, museums, and lovely books !
Is there anything you would be a good advocate for? Please elaborate if so.
Animals, and vegetarianism. Veggies are cool and I don't eat animals. I hope to convey this empathy to my son. Also, not really a cause, but being kind. I think we should all be kind. I want people to smile and have a good time.
What would you say sets you apart from other illustrators? Something you feel is unique to you.
Always keep it simple and strong ! :) I like bold colours, and also handwriting :)
If you have done paid commissions prior to joining the agency, what would you say is something that clients repeatedly come to you for (up to now)?
My clients say they love my style, because it's colourful and joyful. They want something that makes them smile and they love my "little faces".
How would you describe your style?
Colourful, bold, but also soft, smiling and cute.
Please give a scenario of a project that would mean the world to you, if you were offered it — something meaningful to you.
I would love to make more books. Especially picture books for tiny ones!
Are you working on any personal projects you can share with us?
Yes, I’m working on some book concepts. One is about dinosaurs and another is about numbers and gardens.
Finally, if you were to illustrate a book related to a real life person, who would that be?
Good question! Maybe a female artist like Yayoi Kusama or Niki de Saint Phalle.
