Happy World Book Day by Toby Melville Brown

"Happy World Book Day! It's also three years since my father died. Forgive the tone change. But growing up, story time with my dad was very special. Those creations by beloved authors were brought to life by his unforgettable energy. I decided to commemorate him and those formative characters by drawing on one of his old books. Matilda, Fungus The Bogeyman and Winnie The Witch, loiter around a bookcase: the resting place of so many adventures. If you like this creation, it's available on my shop as a signed giclée print." - Toby

Toby Melville-Brown is an illustrator based in medieval Rye, UK. His drawings and animations are celebrations of places. Subjects include architecture, maps, and transport (he studied Transportation Design!). Toby has worked across a variety of fields including sport, fashion, and real estate. Throughout his 10 years+ career, clients have included; The Wimbledon Tennis Championships, Burberry, The Crown Estate. One notable career challenge was drawing onto 60 Roger Federer themed ping pong bats within 7 days for a Nike installation. Toby personally presented the artworks to the tennis legend at a product launch event.

In between commissions, Toby creates artworks of his own, inspired by travels. These include; maps of the cities he visits, his favourite London establishments and vistas from train windows. More recently, he has taken to drawing plein air; drawing spaces in their immediate setting gives his works a joyful looseness.

Social betterment has long been a preoccupation of this artist. Toby’s projects have raised vital funds for causes such as the protection of women and girls, local refugee communities and cash-strapped local services. Reflecting on his fortune to travel and make art, Toby plans to run a project raising money for those less fortunate, specifically to Emmaus - the charity that provides support and training for homeless individuals.
