Artist Perspective by Jiarui Jiang, Influence of Nature

The Artist's Perspective, written by Jiarui Jiang. Jiarui is an illustrator and storyteller based in China. She gradated from the Maryland Institute College of Art with an MA in illustration, and her work revolves around themes of nature, food, and more recently beautiful insects...

Hi there! This is Jiarui Jiang, I’m an illustrator and storyteller based in China. I primarily make picture books and narrative illustrations, mostly in digital media. One of my main creative inspirations is things in nature. I am obsessed with their unique colours and textures. I try my best to use brushes to express their wonderful texture details in my works, such as the reflection of the gravel in the soil, the bark of trees, the difference between branches and leaves, the delicate and fluffy feathers of birds, and the smooth carapace of insects, etc. I hope to make the objects in my works exist in a reasonable and unreasonable way, so they retain authentic textural details but are presented in imaginative colours. I wanted to show the world from a child's perspective in this way, it's so full of surprises and fun.

Making books is my most passionate creative endeavor. The best way to tell a story is to pair it with images! I'm also exploring different manifestations of books (you can see my handmade book projects on my Instagram or personal website) If you have any great ideas, please feel free to let me know! I'd love to work together to bring them to life!
