Keenon Ferrell is a digital animator and illustrator based in NYC

Keenon Ferrell is a digital animator and illustrator based in NYC. He likes to make artwork that is sassy with lots of attitude and emotion. He’s inspired by music, fashion, and sports.

We’re very pleased to welcome him to the Illo roster, but I’m sure you're wanting to find out the story behind his great work!….

When did you start illustrating?

I've had an interest in art since I was about 8 or 9, but did not take it seriously until I was around 17 years old.

Who has been the most supportive in your illustration career, perhaps your teacher, family, friends?

I've been lucky enough that most of my family and friends were supportive of me, but it was my Aunt that first exposed me to the arts on a deeper level and would take me to museums and shows, and would encourage me to try to become a better artist.

Did you always think art was something that was going to be a major part of your life?

I never thought I would make a career out of it. Growing up you always heard about the "starving artist" troupe, and I was actually on my way to follow a career to be a dr. It wasn't until I saw a documentary on how Disney movies were made that I saw that all of those people were artists and doing what they loved everyday!

What is your favourite subject matter to illustrate?

I love drawing people with very loose whimsical strokes.

How would you describe your style?

Bold, emotional with a hint of Sass

What is your favourite collaboration to date?

Designing for a series of short films for StoryCorps because they were short subjects packed full of genuine emotion which was really great to create around.

What interested you about being represented by Illo Agency?

I love their idea of making diversity the norm rather than the exception.

Do you have a favourite author, film director, or designer?

Al Hirschfeld is my absolute favourite Designer/ illustrator. His style is one of my biggest influences. Director, I adore Berry Jenkins because his use of colour when lighting a scene is absolutely beautiful and he uses it to help tell the story.

Are you working on any personal projects you can share with us?

Nothing personal at the moment, all projects that i'm working on are commissioned or freelance.

Do you listen to podcasts? If so, do you have a favourite?

I tend to listen to just random music playlists on Spotify, or live concert recordings on youtube.
