Introducing Deborah Schreiber, her playful work is inspired by her love for traveling, wildlife and nature

Introducing the very talented Deborah Schreiber, her playful work is inspired by her love for traveling, wildlife and nature and feeds from personal experiences, an interest in different cultures and a colourful imagination - all with an aim to produce atmospheric illustrations. When she isn’t drawing, cooking or daydreaming she can often be found working with children, giving art and craft workshops.

When did you start illustrating?

I guess I always did it. I just never stopped. I used to draw and paint all the time when I was a child and even my school work was always accompanied by my drawings. But it wasn’t until I studied Illustration that I focused on this field consciously.

Who has been the most supportive in your illustration career, perhaps your teacher, family, friends?

I have to say all of the above. And each in their own way.  But I am very thankful for my family and friends who always encourage me in my decisions to be an artist and believe in me, especially since I went off to do so in different countries. I also had some very passionate art teachers and illustration tutors who taught me a lot.

Did you always think art was something that was going to be a major part of your life?

Yes, we are quite a creative family and I have always been surrounded by lots of different kind of art. And here I am, living my childhood dream!

What is your favourite subject matter to illustrate?

I love to illustrate images with cultural influences, nature and it’s wildlife in particular. Its a weird and wonderful world we live in and I like to try and capture that.

How would you describe your style?

Oh that’s a tricky one! I don’t think I have a single one as I like to work with a range of media. But I aim for colourful and atmospheric images combined with playful elements. Either within the image or as part of the outcome such as interactive books of some sort.

What is your favorite collaboration to date?

Unfortunately I hadn’t had the chance to work on a collaboration yet  but am very excited about maybe an opportunity in the future.

What interested you about being represented by Illo Agency?

I really like the idea of working with an agency that celebrates global diversity and shares an interest in culture. I definitely felt like this also comes across when you look at all the great illustrators and artist they represent. I hope I’ll fit in!

Are you working on any personal projects you can share with us?

I am currently working on a fun, new picture book idea about animals traveling - will see where this project will take me! My projects always take me on a journey and create a live of their own so am curious to see how this one will turn out.

Do you listen to podcasts? If so, do you have a favourite?

I am interested in a lot of things which makes me listen to various podcasts, especially creative ones but I would like to listen to them more often - something to add to my never ending list of things I want to do.
