Damien Jones; 10 years in illustration and animation.
We’re so excited to introduce Damien Jones, we’ve had our eyes on Damien for some time!
So Damien was born in Launceston, Cornwall, where he is still based today. He is an artist with over 10 years of experience in illustration and animation. He graduated from the Art Institute at Bournemouth with a degree in animation production in 2008. His first job was in Edinburgh, as an assistant animator on Sylvain Chomet’s Oscar-nominated film ‘The Illusionist’. Here's the trailer for you to enjoy!
Damien has been working as a freelance artist for many years, in film, television, and publishing, as well as individual illustrative-based projects. With a passion for drawing, Damien found himself getting work as an illustrator, and working with most major publishers, including taking over for Graham Howells on the popular Dragon Masters series with Scholastic. His work has enabled him to work with well know companies such as Aardman Ltd, Honeywell Aerospace, Scholastic, Lupus Films Ltd., and more.

What is your favourite subject matter to illustrate?
I love to draw emotion, so trying to capture expressions and making the drawing have feeling. To draw something that you can relate to emotionally or feels like a freeze frame from life even if the subject matter is more abstract is something I love to do.
How would you describe your style?
My style I think is quite loose and sketchy when working on personal work, and love to play with textures and colours.
What is your favourite collaboration to date?
My favourite collaboration was working on the Dragon Masters series with Scholastic, mainly due to the feed back from the readers and getting lovely messages and drawings from their fans.
What interested you about being represented by Illo Agency?
I like the diversity in the clients and impressed by the standard of artist on their books. Also have enjoyed following their live sessions on social media with their illustrators and you can really see the passion they have for the artist they represent.
Do you have a favourite author, film director, or designer?
I am a huge fan of animation and was lucky enough to work for Sylvain Chomet who I loved his work along with Joanna Quinn and her films and how she brings her amazing drawings and stories to life.
Are you working on any personal projects you can share with us?
I am currently working on a few stories one is a prequel to the teddies bears picnic, and another involving and underwater postman! Ssshh…top secret.
Do you listen to podcasts? If so, do you have a favourite?
My favourite podcast that I can’t recommend enough is ‘Studiomate Steve’, wonderful illustration podcast by the wonderful Steve Lentos!
